There are 4 areas of focus in natural horsemanship: on-line, liberty, freestyle
riding (no contact) and finesse riding (with contact). You can choose to focus
in only one area or multiple areas; it would depend on your needs or goals.
On-Line (12', 22' 45' lead) – working with horses on the ground teaches
you to read your horse and build a strong, trusting and respectful relationship
based on love, communication and leadership. On-line work teaches safety and
confidence and develops your ability to communicate with your horse with
greater subtlety. You’ll begin to learn how to orchestrate the movement of your
horse’s feet in all directions. In the herd, the horse that moves another
horse’s feet becomes alpha or the leader.
Liberty - working on the ground without a halter or lead rope.
This is the ultimate test of trust. It is the "truth" about how your horse is
feeling towards you. You will learn to yield your horse’s body parts in every
direction. Liberty is about the horse "catching you" any place, any time and
being able to ask more of your horse without the horse leaving you.
Freestyle - riding without contact helps horses become more responsible,
self-controlled, confident and relaxed. Having no contact helps riders become
more balanced, confident and develop a deeply connected seat. Freestyle riding
is on a casual (loose) rein. Initially, freestyle riding is done in a halter
until the student learns not to pull on the reins or use the reins for balance.
As the student advances, a snaffle bridle may be used instead of the halter.
Finesse - riding with contact is one of the most challenging things to
do well. Horses are naturally claustrophobic, so building contact (on the bit)
and collection needs to be done carefully. The student should feel safe and
confident on a horse before asking for precision and riding with contact. At
this point, the student should routinely ride with light hands and lots of
release.
